Popular Misconceptions About Compounding Pharmacies: Debunked

At Wellspring Pharmacy we are very aware that not everyone knows what we do. There are a lot of rumors and myths that go around about Compounding Pharmacies, and we are here to tell you the facts behind some of these popular misconceptions.

Misconception #1: Pharmaceutical compounding is not legal.

 - Pharmaceutical compounding is VERY legal and is practiced by licensed pharmacists who work in licensed and registered pharmacies in line with regulations from their State Board of Pharmacy. The pharmacies must follow strict rules and regulations for the kinds of medicines and medical ingredients they are using.

Misconception #2: Compounding pharmacies are not regulated.

- The fact is that compounding pharmacies are heavily regulated just like a normal pharmacy would be. They are regulated by the State Boards of Pharmacy and the FDA steps in when they need to. The new model for compounding pharmacies 503B, also called the outsourcing facility, is regulated by the FDA, and follows CGMP Guidelines.

Misconception #3: Compounded medicines are not FDA approved.

- Compounded medicines are in fact, just as safe to take as a regular pharmacy medication and may also be a little better for you as well. They are made only with FDA approved active pharmaceutical ingredients obtained from FDA registered facilities. And because we make our medications, a lot of things that a corporate pharmacy would put into a medication, (fillers, preservatives) are not added. Making the medication better for you.

Misconception #4: Compounded medications are very expensive.

- When it comes to compounded medicines, they are actually considered a cost-effective treatment option that practitioners can offer their patients. Especially if the commercial medication they are taking jumps drastically in price, or their insurance doesn't cover it any longer.

Misconception #5: It is extra work and hard for pharmacists to prescribe compound medication.

- It is no more work for a knowledgeable pharmacist to prescribe a compound medication rather than a traditional commercial medication. A good compounding pharmacist will be with you every step of the way during your consultation and will answer any and all questions that you may have about the medication they will be receiving.

We hope that this clears up some of the things that you have heard about compounding pharmacies like Wellspring Custom Pharmacy.
