Compounding Medications for Children

Compound Pharmacy in Ontario Ohio, Wellspring Custom Pharmacy

Compounding medication has a lot of benefits, especially when it comes down to giving the medications to children. As many parents can agree to, getting a child to take their medication can be a battle. From bad taste to not being in a form the child can take, compounding can help make giving medication easier.

Changing the form a medication is given in is one of the top reasons children’s medication is sent to a compounding pharmacy. Swallowing tablets and capsules isn’t a skill they learn until they are older and close to school age. Often times there is a tradition medication that would benefit their illness but isn’t able to be given because of the form. Compounding the desired prescription can allow you to give it in an easier form, such as liquid, topical cream, or even gummies and lollipops for kids. Liquid medications that are easy to swallow but leave a bad taste can also have flavors added to help kids fight taking them at least a little less.

One of the other extremely helpful benefits of compounding amedication is the dosage. Mass-produced medications only come in so many dosage variations, typically for adults. Sure, you can try to cut and divide a dose, but it doesn't foolproof. Through compounding the pharmacists are able to adjust the amount of each ingredient based on the age and weight of the patient. This opens up more options to treat illnesses.

Commercially produced medications are great for a lot of things, however, sometimes they just don’t quite meet the exact need of the patient and their diagnosis. Wellspring can help with that. Consulting with your doctor and pharmacist can help develop that exact compounded form of medication you, and your child need. For more about our compounding services, click here.
